Happy New Year!
Here’s an easy-to-keep resolution
We all know how hard it is to keep those New Year’s resolutions; you know, the ones where we promise ourselves we’re going to eat better, exercise more, get more sleep, save money, the list goes on and on. But here’s a resolution that is not only easy to keep but can protect you and your family against ID theft and all the ramifications that go along with it—shredding!
Start 2019 off with shredding!
Out with the old—in with the new
The New Year is the ideal time to de-clutter and that means getting rid of outdated and unneeded paperwork that’s collecting dust and posing a risk to your identity. So as you kick off 2019, make it a point to gather up documents that are outdated and not needed (make digital copies if you think you’ll need them later), including:
- Credit card statements (older than 3 months)
- ATM receipts
- Utility bills
- Medical bills & statements (that have already been paid)
- Canceled checks
- Junk mail
- Used plane tickets
- Expired IDs & driver’s licenses
Any other paperwork that contains your name, address, phone number and other personal information that is not needed.
Take charge as tax time nears
As we all know, this is the time of year that tax documents are being prepared and mailed and emailed. Folks are gathering up all the needed paperwork to file their tax returns and thieves are on the lookout for any tiny bit of information to gain access to your identity. So now is the perfect time to ensure that you’ve done all you can to keep your confidential information secure. Take the following steps:
- Collect mail from the mailbox as early as possible each day to prevent interception
- Make digital copies of all tax return documents
- Shred old tax documents & returns after making digital copies
- File your return early
Make it a habit
New Year’s resolutions that become habits are the only ones that really stick, right? So it only makes sense to commit to protecting your identity on a regular basis—and doing it is easier than all the other resolutions. Set up a regular shred program with a provider that will come to your home or office and destroy sensitive documents right before your eyes. This will give you peace of mind that your private information is secure and that you’ve taken the necessary steps to keep it that way.
