St. Lucie County was incorporated in 1905 and encompasses the cities of Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie West, and St. Lucie Village. Located north of Stuart and South of Vero Beach, St. Lucie had a diverse population of approximately 313, 0000 as of the latest census.
The name St. Lucie was first given to this area by the Spanish they began construction of a fort on December 13, the feast day of the Roman Catholic Saint Lucia. Old Spanish maps identify the area between Vero Beach and Stuart as Santa Lucia around 1567, which included what is now known as Vero Beach to Stuart. The Anglo-Saxon version, St. Lucie, was not officially used to identify the area until the 1900s.
